O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 at the beginning of 2005 when she was a high school student. The judges loved her voice and she was able to advance into the Top 100 Round. Her performance was highly applauded by the judge. However, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during the Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, lowest 3 and the bottom 2. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd they believed that Melissa was the top contestant. In spite of consistently impressive performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. Following two stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, as O'Neil along with Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two, the judge Werner said that newspapers in the early morning were going to read O'Neil defeated Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the youngest champion in the show's time . O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
