O'Grady's father is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised by her parents who resided in Wheaton within Illinois and graduated in 1981 with a diploma from the Wheaton North High School. She was a part of a couple of commercials on television, but then moved into Los Angeles. The first role she had was to model for Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She debuted on screen in 1988, in the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby. She was later cast in the main character in ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
